The Young Turks: October 23, 2013

John Iadarola, Ana Kasparian, and Ben Mankiewicz hosting from YouTube Space LA. Mythbusting Obamacare. It is far too early for any concrete claims to be made either way about the results of the ACA since its implementation has just begun and the employer mandate does not begin until 2015. According to Senator Rand Paul, libs just don’t understand the “intricacies” of capitalism. The economic records of the JFK, Johnson, and Clinton administrations beg to differ. Senator Rand Paul doesn’t know why “Obamacare” needs to be advertised. Talk about not understanding the intricacies of capitalism! Bill O’Reilly fears that the ACA will lead to a culture of entitlement and equates it with socialism and a “form of communism”. The government of Scotland has passed new measures to combat the effects of climate change including the removal of fossil fueled vehicles from the country by 2050 as well as incentives for other eco-friendly behavior. The $66k mark has been reached in the Indiegogo campaign. Thank you! Wild Card Wednesday is back! The Texas voter ID law took effect this week. The new law discriminates against women, students, and minorities through disenfranchisement by making them jump through unnecessary hoops during the voter registration process. Maine Governor Paul LePage blatantly and erroneously claims that 47% of “able-bodied” residents choose not to work. The actual number is closer to 3.6%. When confronted over the discrepancy, LePage’s office refused to comment. The parents of a 12 year old boy in Nevada who committed a school shooting earlier this week may face charges under the state’s Child Access Prevention law. Jofi Joseph, a White House staffer, was fired for running an anonymous twitter account where he humiliated foreign policy and national security dignitaries. According to a study conducted by the Tech Policy Institute, internet use during leisure time has negative effects on many aspects of daily life. A 19 year old NYC college student was arrested because of racial profiling while buying a $350 belt at Barney’s. The clerk assumed he could not afford the belt because he is black. The father of a high school football player in Texas sues for bullying. The score was 91-0, but the winning team took many measures of sportsmanship including benching the first stringers. Matthew Cordle, the man who confessed to killing a man while driving drunk on You Tube, is sentenced to 6 ½ years.
