The Young Turks: September 26, 2013

Desi Doyen and Jimmy Dore hosting from YouTube Space LA. The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is releasing a long awaited report tomorrow. Preliminary drafts have been leaked emphasizing and confirming previous findings and predictions. Some climate scientists think some of the panel’s findings are too conservative. Will emerging environmental problems create economic opportunities? John Boehner and other Republican leaders are threatening a government shutdown over the Affordable Care Act, the debt ceiling, military spending, and other issues on the “GOP wishlist”. Rep. Peter King thinks that Ted Cruz’s marathon speech against the Affordable Care Act in the Senate was a “a fool’s errand”. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia sides with Republican opposition in support of the delay of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma also disagreed with Senator Cruz’s marathon speech tactic against the ACA. The Tea Party has had an uptick in fundraising in the wake of Cruz’s stunt. The threatened government shutdown does not include the National Security Agency and will not affect its domestic spying operations. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida seems to fear the possible success of the ACA and what that may imply for the future of his party. California will raise the minimum wage from $8 to $10 by 2016. How will this affect the economy both in the state and in the rest of the country?  California business lobbyists are fearful about entrepreneurs’ ability to start new businiesses. Recent studies and the health of businesses in California and elsewhere which already pay $10/hr don’t support this fear. Walmart stock has been plummeting ever since the corporation cut back on inventory and fulltime employees, relying increasingly on temp labor.

The trial took place in the wake of the George Zimmerman outrage. A former high school teacher in Montana was released from prison after serving just 31 days for raping a 14 year old student who then killed herself. Ana gives member shoutouts. A Page Six writer for The New York Post is making her boyfriend 300 sandwiches in order to win a marriage proposal. After a traffic accident, a man in China is growing a nose on his forehead with the help of plastic surgeons. A 14 year old rape victim in India was forced to strip in front of a male police officer to prove that she was actually assaulted. A high school football coach in Utah requires the entire football team to sign a contract promising they will no longer participate in cyberbullying.
