The Young Turks: October 03, 2013

Cenk Uygur hosting from YouTube Space LA. Another shooting occurred in Washington DC today on Capitol Hill. A woman rammed into the barricades of the Capitol and engaged in a shootout with police. Ironically the building was on lockdown during the ongoing government shutdown. House Speaker Boehner has told his Republican colleagues in politi-speak via spokesman Michael Steele that he will press for raising the debt ceiling, placating their wall street masters. The government shutdown will not affect the Army-Navy game. Way to prioritize. Marlin Stutzman, a Republican representative of Indiana, doesn’t want to be “disrespected” and wants to “get something out of [the shutdown]”, but doesn’t know what that “something” is. Obama does a great job calling him out in campaign mode. Rep. Stutzman immediately started to backpedal. Republicans hold a closed-door meeting with Senator Ted Cruz to find out the endgame of the government shutdown. It turns out there is no endgame. Ted Cruz never had a strategy to begin with and the stunt was all about Cruz’s own political and fundraising gain. Senator Mitch McConnell, while wearing a mic, discusses inside baseball with Senator Rand Paul. Senator Paul is under the impression that their side is gaining ground and will be victorious in the outcome of the shutdown. Representative Darrell Issa refers to Obama as a “dictator”. This is yet another indication that Republicans will never cooperate with Obama and the Democrats. Cenk reads #TYTLive tweets. The United States is only the second nation-state to have a government shutdown. Many countries are baffled and amused by the concept alone. Australia in 1975 was the only other country to have a government shutdown after the Queen had the Prime Minister clean house. A congressman visits the WWII memorial in Washington and chews out a park ranger for doing her job of keeping visitors out of the park. An onlooker then turns the tables. Texas Representative Louie Gohmert claims he never plays politics with veterans. Laughably false. Republicans continue to play the blame game over the shutdown and further the absurd claim that the Democrats are unwilling to negotiate.

Ana Kasparian joins Cenk for the second hour. Cenk reads #TYTLive tweets. Representative Todd Rokita makes a sexist remark to CNN anchor Carol Costello by ending a debate with, “You’re beautiful, but you have to be honest”. What if the roles were reversed? The TYT Supreme Court is in session. The world’s greatest mugshot was taken after a potential rapist was fought off by his victim with fryingpan blows to the head. A straight man, David Jimenez, was attacked in Brooklyn because his attackers thought he was gay. The incident is being treated as a hate-crime. Cenk reads #TYTLive tweets. Body image pressures continue for hollywood actresses. Jennifer Lawrence was once told she was too fat for a role when she was a young girl. Now that she has the power in her profession to speak out she said in an interview, “If anybody even tries to whisper the word ‘diet’ … you can go fuck yourself”. A surprising cheating survey reveals that both sexes tend to cheat with less attractive people than their significant others. Another surprising finding was women tended to give more importance to the looks of their fling than men. Feeling appreciated was the main reason for cheating that women cited. Marina Shifrin, the woman who quit her job in a viral dance video posted on YouTube, was offered a job on Queen Latifah’s show. It also turns out she animated Cenk at one point for her former job! Cenk reads #TYTLive tweets. Ross William Ulbricht, the founder of the recently shut down illegal marketplace called Silk Road, was also busted for trying to hire a hitman online. A Tesla car catches fire after a crash in Seattle. Bans for the model are starting to be considered and Tesla stock is in peril. The office of Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona will have conditions placed on it after a federal judge rules that his agency engaged in racial profiling of latinos.
